Soroptimist International, a global group aimed at improving the lives of girls and women across the world, is setting up a new chapter in Wyndham.
The group has put the call out for women interested in joining.
The name “Soroptimist” comes from the Latin words “soror”, meaning sister, and “optima”, meaning best.
The group started in California in 1921 and now has more than 3000 clubs in 126 countries.
Soroptimist International Victorian region extension and membership development co-ordinator Karen Thornton said the organisation worked on projects to support women and children.
Soroptimist members recently attended a family violence prevention and gender equity seminar run by the Victorian Immigrant and Refugee Women Coalition.
“The focus of the workshop was to learn about various types of family violence and understand that not all family violence is physical violence,” Ms Thornton said.
At the session, the participants brainstormed ways to identify family violence and learnt about the myths and facts related to the issue.
