One Brimbank road user had their car impounded, while another five lost their licences as part of a recent nation-wide police operation.
Sixty-two offences were detected across Brimbank during Operation Safe Speeds, a 24-hour road blitz targeting speeding drivers, on Thursday, November 16.
While relatively pleased with the local results, Brimbank Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Trent Hewet said it was disappointing to see road users put themselves in danger so frequently.
“Although results were pleasing, with no serious injury or fatal collisions reported for the period, it is somewhat disappointing that drivers continue to put themselves and other road users at risk by committing these offences,” he said.
“It’s particularly disappointing that even though there’s a heavy media backing, drivers continue to flirt with danger and speed.”
In addition to 23 speed offences, seven
phone/distraction offences and six seat belt offences were also detected. Across the country, 6600 motorists were caught speeding during the operation.
Victoria Police Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Doug Fryer said the results were disturbing.
“It’s really disappointing to think that, nationally, 275 motorists were detected over the limit every hour,” Assistant Commissioner Fryer said.
“The highest speed detected in Victoria was 180km/h in a 100km/h zone, which is absolute madness.”
