Junior hockey players go international

In mid-2016, the Caroline Springs Hockey Club didn’t exist – yet little more than 12 months later, a group of its junior members will feature at one of the sport’s biggest
events.

The children will be mascots at this week’s International Festival of Hockey, with club communications officer David Gorton saying the event has generated a great deal of excitement around the young club.

“It’s a terrific opportunity for the children to meet some of the best players in the world,” he said. “Maybe after seeing the best in the world, it might even inspire some to take their game to the next level.”

As mascots, the juniors will march out hand-in-hand with the players and stand with them for the national anthems, with their faces to be beamed out across television sets around the globe.

“We’re lucky enough to be involved in the Netherlands versus USA match this Saturday,” he said. “The Netherlands are the No.1 team in the world, so that’s generated some excitement.

“But every child dreams of one day playing for their country, so the Hockeyroos versus Japan game is certainly one everyone is excited about being involved in.”

The Melbourne leg of the International Festival of Hockey, which will be held at the State Netball Hockey Centre in Parkville, runs from November 8-12
