Keilor Park’s new women’s football team is already generating plenty of excitement, even in the early stages of planning.
Team manager Leesa Wilson said early signs had been positive, with about 20 players expressing interest.
Wilson played with West Brunswick in the VAFA last season, but wanted to bring women’s football to her home club.
“My husband has been a player for Keilor Park for a number of years,” she said.
“I played for West Brunswick last year and am now expecting my first child, so I won’t be playing next year.
“I always thought it would be good to have a women’s team at Keilor Park. It would be good to bring a bit more diversity into the club. The president and committee have been really supportive.”
She said many of the women showing interest in playing were already familiar with the club.
“There’s been a lot of chatter on Facebook and emails talking to people,” she said.
“Mostly it’s been girlfriends of players who have been interested so far and people from the local gym. Some wives and partners are also interested.
“Anyone affiliated with the club is getting behind it.”
A coach is still to be appointed, but several of the male players have expressed interest in the role.
As well as interest from possible players, Livestrong Primal Fitness has come on board as the side’s major sponsor.
The women’s team will do its pre-season with the men’s side and will play in the Essendon District Football League.
After having a combined competition with the Western Region Football League last season, the EDFL will have a stand-alone competition next year.
The club’s first training session will be combined with an information night on Wednesday, October 18, from 6.30pm at the club. Anyone interested in finding out more can contact womensleague@keilorparkfc.com.au
