Australia’s biggest garage sale is heading to Brimbank.
The Garage Sale Trail is a two-day sustainability initiative of garage sales at schools, businesses, community groups and homes.
The Australia-wide event will take place on the weekend of October 21 and 22, with Brimbank mayor John Hedditch saying it offers a fun way for people to declutter their homes, raise money for community support, meet their neighbours and reuse and recycle unwanted items.
“We’re pleased to be participating in the community event for the very first time,”
Cr Hedditch said.
“It’s a great way for communities to connect and interact with their neighbourhood around the issue of resource consumption and the environmental benefits of reuse and recycling. It is important that council identify sensible ways to promote reuse and waste minimisation to help build a cleaner, greener Brimbank.”
The Garage Sale Trail is supported by more than 150 councils and has more than 320,000 participants nationally.
Last year, more than 2.1 million items were listed for sale, with an average household income of $379.
Community groups made an average of $650 and schools $1500, with $3.9 million changing hands across the nation.
With more than 10,000 sales likely to be held this year, the figures are expected to increase.
