Albion takes to toy land

It’s been a year since Albion and Friends Community Toy Library opened its doors, and it already has big plans for the next 12 months.

The library celebrated its first birthday last week with a visit from the mayor as well as members of the community. Co-ordinator Bridey Lokhorst-Blight said it had been a hugely successful venture.

“I was involved with another toy library and that really launched me into volunteering and getting involved in the community,” Ms Lokhorst-Blight said.

“It’s been a great year since we launched the library in Albion. We really pride ourselves on providing a comfortable, safe, and friendly way to meet other parents and play with your kids, and we really try hard to make it accessible to people from all backgrounds.

“It’s amazing what we’ve been able to do in a year.”

The library has 45 families on its books, with anyone welcome to come and use the library when it is open, and members able to borrow toys to take home.

Ms Lokhorst-Blight said most of the toys in the library were donated, with more coming via grants and funding from Brimbank Council.

With plans to add more programs and setting up partnerships with disadvantaged groups, Ms Lokhorst-Blight said there was a need for more volunteers to keep the library growing.

“There’s no way we could do what we do without our volunteers,” she said.

“We’d love to have more on board to spread the load.”
