Haven on Hyde: 12 Hyde Street, Deer Park, 3023

Allen and his wife Sheryl renovated this period residence 10 years ago, the next generation in a lineage spanning 75 years to call it home.

Allen remembers watching horse-drawn lawn cutters clear the park opposite (now the local footy club and John McLeod reserve). He remembers the hunt club that inspired the suburb’s name. He remembers the Deer Park of old – of which this house is a part.

Twelve Hyde street has a charming street presence. Two flowering almond trees frame the jarrah deck with Edwardian-style timber flourishes. French doors and the two-metre wide hall are complemented by more than three metre-high ceilings with ornate plaster work and every ceiling is soaring, beautifully maintained and restored.

The main bedroom is generously proportioned and has plush carpet, soaring ceilings and modern built-in robes sensitive to the period. Together with a wall-mounted gas heater with surround and corner-set sash windows the decor creates a true retreat feel.

There is a separate powder room and two further bedrooms, all with the same period charm, the third with built-in robes made of the original linen cupboard.

The living zone of the house is well presented and the attention to detail and quality of the renovation clearly evident here.

Walls were removed to open out the space. The formal dining room which was previously “always kept for best” is today a part of a flowing and contemporary floor plan with ducted heating and incorporates a period-sensitive contemporary kitchen, generous meals area and living room beyond.

Hardwood floors, high ceilings and picture rails all create a warm atmosphere.

In the kitchen, 2pac cream coloured drawer storage and granite benchtops are complemented by a central hardwood island workbench. A large window looks out to the renovated sunroom, which is a comfortable and insulated second living space with views of the working garden.

There’s plum, apple, peach, lemon and cherry trees in the backyard and two sheds, both built by Allen’s father.

Close to cafes and delis, the train and schools – here is a piece of Deer Park history perfectly positioned to be the quintessential family residence.
