A new secondary college in Melbourne’s west looks set to be called Fraser Rise Secondary College.
School principal John Goodman said a stakeholder group that included local residents and staff from the Department of Education and Training came up with a shortlist of 12 potential names for the school, which was provisionally known as Taylors Hill West Secondary College.
He said Fraser Rise Secondary College emerged as the preferred name and that it would be floated with prospective parents and the surrounding community this month.
The name will link the school to the area soon to be known as Fraser Rise, which will be one of 11 new suburbs in Melton that will come into being within the next few months.
The new suburb is just west of Hillside and Caroline Springs and is bordered by the Melton Highway and Plumpton and Taylors roads.
“The school isn’t located in Taylors Hill and there’s no such place as Taylors Hill West, so really there wasn’t much scope to persist with that name,” Mr Goodman said.
“There were some suggestions around the nearby street names, but there was a strong sense that we wanted to anchor the school in the suburb.”
The $35.2 million school will begin accepting enrolments for years 7 and 10 in September from parents within a “designated neighbourhood area”. The boundaries of this catchment area are yet to be released.
The first cohort of about 300 students will start at the beginning of the 2018 school year.
The Andrews state government allocated $12 million for planning and construction of the first stage of the school, in City Vista Court, Taylors Hill, in the 2016-17 budget. Another $23.2 million was committed in the 2017-18 state budget to deliver the second stage.
