Aspiring young Brimbank musicians will strut their stuff when the annual Freeza Push Start battle of the bands heats get rolling again next month.

This year, the Brimbank heats will feature soul, R&B and rap artists.

Council community wellbeing director Kath Brackett said the contest provided young artists a valuable stepping stone into the music industry.

“It provides opportunities for young local artists to network, gain performance experience and present their talents to a wider audience,” she said.

“The artists will be judged by industry professionals, giving performers the opportunity to receive valuable feedback.”

The event is part of a statewide competition for artists under 25. Winners of the local heats go on to regional and state finals. The state finals are held as part of the Moomba Festival each year. The grand final winner receives the opportunity to work in a professional studio, get the support of a marketing team and access to essential tools for success in the music industry.

Ms Brackett said the event would be part of an increased focus on the arts by council following the opening of the Bowery Theatre earlier this year.

“Brimbank recognises the important role that live music and the arts play in our community – particularly for younger residents,” she said. “Through the Bowery Theatre and the St Albans Community Centre, council is working to provide greater access to the arts.”

The Brimbank Freeza Push Start heats will be held on Friday, July 15, at the Bowery Theatre, St Albans, from 5.30-7.30pm. Admission is free.
