Victoria University Secondary College is stepping up in the rugby league world, with the club’s senior side earning admittance into the top tier of the national schoolboys competition.
The St Albans school is just the second Victorian school to make it to the top tier, which is run by the NRL, and head coach Tony Adam said it was a huge achievement.
“It’s the pinnacle of schoolboy rugby league,” Mr Adam said.
The school has been running a rugby league academy for a number of years, tapping into the strong Polynesian community in the neighbouring suburbs.
They will now travel regularly to play the best schools in the country, largely from New South Wales, as well as hosting some top schools at home.
“If they get to play the best it exposes them to recruiters and what’s required to be at the top end. Our goal is to earn respect” Mr Adam said.
