Worrying trend for Green Gully

There is cause for concern for Green Gully in the National Premier League.

As the fixtures have piled up in the league and cup for the Cavaliers in the past month, so have their games without a win.

A 1-1 draw with Bulleen Lions on home soil at Green Gully Reserve on Saturday night was the Cavaliers’ sixth game in a row in which they were unable to secure the full three points.

In that span, the Cavaliers have drawn four and lost one in the league and also lost a cup match.

The Cavaliers’ last victory was all the way back on May 3, when they scrapped out a 1-0 win over Avondale in the FFA Cup.

The alarm bells should be ringing for Green Gully coach Arthur Papas and his team.

The good news for the Cavaliers is they remain in the top six.

However, defending their spot will be no easy task as they face a tough month of matches, starting with Port Melbourne Sharks (11th) at home on Saturday night and then finals-like games against Avondale (fourth), Heidelberg United (first) and South Melbourne (third) to follow.

Green Gully would have walked away from the Bulleen game empty-handed had it not been for a late equaliser from Jonathan Bounas.

Melbourne Knights have made it a bit of a habit of conceding late goals this season.

The Knights did so once again and paid the price – a 2-1 loss to Bentleigh Greens at Knights Stadium on Friday night.

A 93rd minute tap-in from substitute Kieran Dover secured the 10-man Greens their victory.

St Albans predictably went down 4-1 to Heidelberg United in the top-versus-bottom clash at Churchill Reserve.

The Saints were outclassed all game, with Caleb Mikulic scoring a consolation goal in the second half.

In men’s state league 1, Sydenham Park secured its first win under new coach John Markovski by toppling high-flying Banyule City 2-1 at Yallambie Park Reserve.

Westgate moved off the bottom of the ladder after a 1-0 win over Altona East Phoenix at Castley Reserve.

Keilor Park and Essendon Royals played out a 1-1 draw at Keilor Park Recreation Reserve, while Western Suburbs were the latest victims of league leader Altona Magic in a 2-0 loss Paisley Park.

In state league 2, Cairnlea scored three goals in the second half to steamroll Diamond Valley United 4-2 at Cairnlea Park, but Westvale is licking its wounds after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Corio.

In state league 3, Brimbank Stallions stretched their lead at the top of the ladder to five points after a confident 3-1 win over Heidelberg Stars, while in state 4, Western Eagles pipped Newmarket Phoenix 2-1 after a double to Jack Karyakos.

In women’s state league 1, Keilor Park claimed a 2-0 away win over Eltham Redbacks, while Kate Spiteri scored the only goal for the Melbourne Knights in a 3-1 loss to front-runners South Yarra.
