VU Western Spurs played exciting, free flowing and attacking football in the opening two rounds of the Women’s VFL season for two wins from two starts.
The Spurs averaged 72.5 points per game across rounds one and two, yielding two superb away wins and high anticipation for their home opener at Henry Turner Memorial Reserve against Melbourne University on Saturday.
Unfortunately for Spurs fans, the balloon got pricked by University.
Once you are at the mercy of University, you get your attacking verve strangled out of you.
University improved to 3-0 and it all had to do with their defensive tactics.
They are conceding a measly 31 points on average and held the Spurs to just 18 in another suffocating defensive performance.
Because University is so good defensively, they don’t need to be the most potent in attack, and their score of 35 on Saturday was enough for a comfortable 17-point win.
It was obviously a disappointing outcome for VU Western Spurs, but they visit bottom-of-the-ladder Seaford on Saturday with a flawless away record.
Aliesha Newman and Ashleigh Gunn were the Spurs only goalkickers on a tough day, while Sarah Jolly, Naomi Ferres and Angelica Gogos were named best for the home side.
The Spurs are fourth on the ladder and retained the sky-high percentage they accumulated in the first two rounds.
