VicRoads knocks back council’s request for traffic lights at busy Keilor intersection

VicRoads will not consider installing traffic safety measures at the Keilor intersection.

The state’s roads authority has no plans to install traffic lights at a busy Keilor intersection despite pleas from Brimbank council.

The council has called on VicRoads to install traffic lights or “keep clear” markings on Green Gully Road at its intersection with Patterson Avenue or Loddon Avenue after fielding complaints from motorists struggling to exit the Calder Rise housing estate on to the busy arterial.

Green Gully Road has become increasingly congested since road works began to widen its entry ramp with the Calder Freeway. Ramp signals are also being installed as part of the CityLink widening project.

Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos said residents in Loddon and Patterson avenues were experiencing serious road safety issues accessing Green Gully Road during peak periods.

“The queuing traffic extends beyond Loddon Avenue and residents are experiencing restricted access to and from Green Gully Road,” Cr Tachos said.

But VicRoads project director Trevor Boyd said that because the entry ramp road works were temporary, changes to regulate the flow of traffic were not being considered.

“We acknowledge these works will cause some delays for drivers as they travel on Green Gully Road approaching the Calder Freeway,” he said.

“These will be completed by September this year, and as they are temporary, we have no plans to install additional traffic signals or keep clear markings.”

His response came less than a week after a three-car crash at the Patterson Avenue intersection in the evening peak. Paramedics were called to assess a primary school-aged boy for minor injuries. He was taken to Sunshine hospital in a stable condition.

A VicRoads spokesman said no other crashes had been recorded along the stretch of Green Gully Road in the five years to December 31 last year.
