Keilor remembering its history

It’ll be a vision of days past on Saturday as Keilor and Maribyrnong Park players wear jumpers made famous by those who came before them.

The two clubs will wear jumpers worn by players in the club’s earlier days. The idea is the brainchild of the Blues.

Blues’ Sandy Matheson said they wanted to build on what they had started last year, when their players wore heritage jumpers for the first time.

“Last year we decided to arrange an annual day that helps the Keilor FC community celebrate the rich history of our club,” he said.

“To develop our “heritage round” further we approached Maribyrnong Park and they came on board, now we both look forward to this special day. In the future, we are hoping the EDFL will help us to develop this further with other clubs getting involved, perhaps even umpires uniforms to reflect our bygone era and other features like a time bell rather than a siren.”

The jumper the Blues will wear was worn from 1880 to the 1940s, when they changed to their current jumper.

The old jumper  is dark blue and white with a red sash. Players also wore blue and white sockings and a black and white cap.

According to a newspaper clipping from 1880, the board voted on changing the jumper to add the red sash as the jumper had been dull. The meeting, like most meetings at the time was held in the local hotel.

The same newspaper clipping said Keilor was delighted by the news Sunbury, Melton and Gisborne would be fielding football sides that year and the teams would play each other.
