Polynesian language schools throws party to raise money

Mani Ah-Fua is looking forward to assuming his alter ego, DJ Magic West, next month at a party to raise money for a Taylors Lakes Polynesian language school.

The president of the not-for-profit Polynesian Kids Community Language School says the May 27 event will help pay for teachers and school supplies.

The Watergardens-based school was set up two years ago to teach Tongan and Samoan language and culture to children between the ages of five and 12 years.

“We want to empower and give our kids confidence in knowing who they are and their roots,” Mr Ah-Fua said.

While the focus is currently on primary school-aged children, the school is hoping to expand to pre-school and secondary school years.

It currently has seven teachers and 70 children registered for its three-hour classes held on Saturdays during school terms.

Mr Ah-Fua said half the “Night Out in the West” ticket funds would go towards the school.

Night Out in the West will be held on Saturday, May 27, from 8pm-12am at 264 McIntyre Road, Sunshine North. Entry costs $10. Information: 0415 292 906
