Keilor Thunder opens its account in emphatic style

Keilor Thunder made a bit of noise in the opening round of the Big V basketball men’s division 1.

The Thunder was in total control from start to finish in a comfortable 100-65 win over the Melton Thoroughbreds at the Caroline Springs Leisure Centre on Saturday night.

Matt Spencer was outstanding for the Thunder, recording 23 points, six rebounds and eight assists.

The other Thunder starter to shine was Jeff Crowe with 17 points, five rebounds and nine assists.

The Thunder got some good production off the bench too, led by BJ Symons with 16 points and eight rebounds.

Keilor (1-0) will be on the road again in round two when it travels to play Shepparton Gators (0-1) on Saturday night.

In the women’s division 1, Keilor was soundly beaten 86-74 by the Latrobe City Energy at Latrobe Leisure Traralgon on Saturday evening.

The Thunder trailed by double figures at the end of each period and never seriously threatened to bring a ‘w’ home.

Genna Anderson was the Thunder’s most productive player with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Amy Smith racked up 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists, but was let down by her eight turnovers.

Keilor (0-1) will play its home opener against first-up winners Whittlesea Pacers (1-0) at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Sunday.
