It wasn’t long after the Boy Scout movement started in the UK in 1907 before it took off in Sunshine.
Just 14 years later, Mrs Jessie McKay, wife of George, subsidised the necessary equipment to set up the 1st Sunshine Troop at Sunshine State School.
Her benevolence began a long chapter in the history of scouting and guiding in the west, which is something that Sunshine Historical Society curator Alan Dash says is worth celebrating.
To do so, the society has collected scouting memorabilia from across the Brimbank region to display at the Hunt Club in Deer Park.
“We have the original charter and guiding materials from the 1940s,” Mr Dash said. “It’s exciting. Many older people in the community have been members of Scouts or Guides, and they have a fondness for it.”
The exhibition will be launched on Friday, March 24, at 5.30pm, and will run for six weeks at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park.
