Green Gully wins two on the trot under new coach

Green Gully has bared its teeth over the past week in the National Premier League Victoria.

The Cavaliers have claimed two wins on the bounce since new coach Brian Vanega took over the top job.

Vanega replaced former coach Arthur Papas, who moved to Saudi Arabia to take an assistant coaching position with powerhouse Al-Ettifaq.

Papas was involved in his first game as assistant with Al-Ettifaq on Friday; the side posting a narrow 1-0 loss to Al-Raed.

There has been no such teething problems for Vanega, who has overseen two victories in a week that has elevated the Cavaliers into the top five.

Green Gully took care of business on Monday night with a 1-0 win over Bulleen Lions at David Barro Stadium, then backed up five nights later by beating Port Melbourne Sharks 4-2 under lights at SS Anderson Oval on Friday night.

The Cavaliers twice trailed in the first half after Port Melbourne found the back of the net either side of Nick Krousoratis’s goal in the 27th minute. But parity was restored a second time through a Jay Davies’ goal just a minute before the break.

The Cavs put the foot down in the second half, registering three valuable road points after second half goals to Wade Dekker and Alex Caniglia, who has scored four goals in four games to be NPL’s leading goal-scorer in the first month.

Green Gully has one more away game, against Avondale at Knights Stadium on Saturday, before finally getting to play their home opener.

Meanwhile, Melbourne Knights were humbled at home by Kingston City in a 2-0 defeat at Knights Stadium on Friday night.

The Knights conceded twice in the second half to Velibor Mitrovic and Slaven Vranesevic.

Andrew Marth’s Knights will be looking to improve on its one win and a draw from four games when facing off against Bulleen Lions away on Monday night.

St Albans Saints remain in the cellar after a 3-1 defeat to Pascoe Vale at Churchill Reserve on Sunday.

Luis Covarrubias scored a late goal for the Saints, but they could not contain the Vales firepower at the other end.

With just one point in four games, the Saints will be desperate to cause an upset when they host South Melbourne on Sunday.
