Call for witnesses to vandalism of 20 bus shelters

Police are searching for witnesses to the smashing of about 20 bus shelters in the Keilor area last week.

Detective-Sergeant Isaac Papdopoulos, of the Brimbank crime investigation unit, said vandals smashed multiple glass bus shelters along the Old Calder Highway and in Sunshine Avenue on Monday or Tuesday night last week.

He said that while the vandalism hadn’t been reported to police, detectives were attempting to track down the offenders behind the crime. He said bus shelter vandalism was a constant issue for police in the area.

“We have a history of this kind of anti-social behaviour, so we’ve gone off on our own bat and called for witnesses in the off chance someone saw something,” he said.

Brimbank councillor Virginia Tachos said that when she was driving to work on Wednesday, she saw that every bus shelter along the Old Calder Highway had been smashed.

“I thought, ‘Geez this isn’t good, the poor kids in the morning’ – there was glass everywhere,” she said.

“This isn’t a new issue – it’s been an issue for years. My concern is that people see this and it deeply impacts them – it starts to make them feel unsafe.”

Adshel is under contract with Public Transport Victoria to install bus shelters. It’s Adshel’s responsibility to maintain the shelters and repair any damages.

Brimbank infrastructure and city services director Neil Whiteside said the council understood Adshel was working with Victorian Transit Police to address the vandalism.

Adshel declined to comment.
