Nearly 100 years after it first put on a show, Sunshine Golden Age Garden Club’s autumn spectacular is on again.
Preparations for its 96th Autumn Show are well in hand, and club member Stanley Ligeza said the club’s biggest event of the year promises to be as popular as ever.
“There aren’t many exhibitions in the metropolitan area because, to our knowledge, there aren’t many clubs that put on their own show,” Mr Ligeza said.
Sunshine’s show features exhibitions and competitions, a children’s section, photography, cookery, plants for sale, and plant handcrafts.The show was first held in Sunshine in 1921 and, remarkably, has not missed a year since, not even during the Great Depression (1929-32)and World War 2.
So how does the show stay relevant so many years on?
“It’s a good question, because we are a very general horticulture group, not a specialist society, as such,” Mr Ligeza said. “We cover most aspects of home gardening and don’t specialise in any particular area of horticulture.This tends to attract the home gardeners … we’ve added things like the children’s section, and photography a few years back, and the homecrafts have been popular since we brought that in,” he said.
“But we always have a large entry of roses and dahlias at this time of year.”
Brimbank mayor John Hedditch will present awards at 3.30pm. The show is on Saturday, March 11, at Glengala Community Hall, Sunshine 11am-4pm.
