The way of a trout with the fly

Chris Myszka is pretty chuffed with himself.

The angler managed to reel in a two-kilogram brown trout while fly-fishing at a secret location near Lake Eildon last week … his special lure – a woolly bugger fly.

The Sunshine Fly Casting Club member has been immersed in the rare art of fly fishing for about 25 years, and occasionally helps out when the Albion-based club organises one of its four-yearly introductory programs.

Fellow member “Fly Fish Steve” takes the classes, and will introduce a new batch of novices for his next, starting February 7, to the fine art of knot trying, including how to string five flies, how to cast a fly and “stream craft”.

They’ll also be taken to that top-secret location to catch trout, Steve said.

An angler of 45 years, Steve said while the program focuses on the technicalities of fly fishing, it is just as much about getting people together and out of the house.

“It’s more of a wellbeing program. A lot of the guys are older and are looking for something to do now that they’re retired,” he said. “We go on trips to Ballarat – we’ve just been to Tasmania.”

The club was formed more than 50 years ago and has more than 50 active members, who meet each week at its King Edward Avenue headquarters at Albion.

The upcoming introductory program includes five weekly classes.

It costs $90 and includes all necessary equipment.
