Power boost to stop outages

A new electricity substation means power outages across Wyndham and Melton should be few and far between.

Work is currently underway on a new Truganina zone substation, which will be located in Derrimut and service about 133,000 industrial, commercial and residential customers in Tarneit, Hoppers Crossing, Wyndham Vale, Caroline Springs, Ravenhall, Taylors Hill, Truganina, Laverton North, Mount Cottrell, Eynesbury and Laverton.

Powercor spokeswoman Emily Joleski said construction was expected to be completed in time for summer 2017-18.

“It will allow Powercor to transfer customers from nearby zone substations, including Sunshine, Laverton, Laverton North, Werribee and St Albans, providing greater flexibility to reroute power as and if required,” Ms Joleski said.

The substation is one of a number of system upgrades Powercor is undertaking to meet the area’s rapid population growth.

These include replacing a transformer at the Laverton North zone substation and redeveloping the Sunshine zone substation.

“For Laverton North zone substation to perform at its optimum, it requires all equipment to be in operation,” Ms Joleski said.

“The replacement of this transformer ensures customers continue to enjoy a safe, reliable and secure supply of electricity.”
