Former Brimbank council mayor Sam David and long-time Sunshine community advocate John Hedditch appear the early contenders for the council’s top job.
With the new council made official today at 4pm, some of the municipality’s 11 new councillors have begun lobbying for the position of Brimbank’s first mayor in more than seven years.
First-time councillor Victoria Borg may also throw her hat in the ring, with the mayoral position to be announced at a special meeting next Tuesday night at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre.
Another former mayor, Cr Margaret Giudice, said she was savouring the moment of her election win for a few days before considering a possible mayoral tilt.
While Cr Hedditch confirmed on Monday morning he was “having a crack”, Cr David said he was confident he could get the numbers but was still 50-50 about putting up his hand.
“I think I can get five numbers,” he said.
“You need a bit of knowledge about the whole thing.
“I’ve not lobbied yet.”
Cr Borg said she was “inclining towards this role”.
“But I need a couple of days to think about it,” she said.
The Star Weekly understands councillors Virginia Tachos, Duyen Anh Pham and Lucinda Bailey have ruled themselves out of the race.
New councillors Georgina Papafotiou, Daniel Allan and Kim Truong, a former Brimbank Citizen of the Year, said they needed to consult with fellow councillors before making a decision.
Councillor Bruce Lancashire has not responded to the Star Weekly’s request for a comment.
