Community Calendar: Around western suburbs

Keilor Rotary Club will host its 9th annual car show on Sunday, May 3, from 9am, in the grounds of the Keilor Hotel, Old Calder Highway, Keilor. Vintage, classic, hot rods, street cars and motorbikes will be on display, with awards for the best restoration, street car, and 16 other categories. Entry is $5, with children under 16 admitted free. Funds raised will go towards domestic violence prevention programs, Hand Brake Turn, which helps young people in need, and other Rotary community projects.

Step back in time

The early days of Sunshine are the focus of two exhibitions running simultaneously at Hunt Club community arts centre, 775 Ballarat Road, Deer Park, until May 9. Industries of Sunshine and Districts 1860s to 1950s, is a collection of photographs, objects and printed material put together by the Sunshine and District Historical Society to celebrate Sunshine’s industrial history, looking beyond the well-known Sunshine Harvester Works. Photographic exhibition Click of the West: 27 years documenting Melbourne’s West by Des Johnson will also be on display.

It’s never too early

Did you know as soon as your child is born, you can register them to attend a funded kindergarten program in the year before they start school? Brimbank council manages the funded kindergarten enrolment service for 34 centres around the municipality to support the placement of children into programs in the year before they attend primary school. Funded kindergarten is free for health care card holders.

Join the band

The Western Region Concert Band rehearses on Saturdays at 9am at Errington Community Centre, Princess Street, St Albans. Vacancies exist for percussion, brass and sax players.

Volunteers needed

The Multiple Sclerosis Community Visitors Scheme needs volunteers to join its western metropolitan program and visit elderly residents in aged care centres to offer companionship once a fortnight. Volunteers who can speak other languages, especially Spanish, are also needed.
