Two former Brimbank mayors get another shot

Two former Brimbank council mayors have been given another shot at representing the municipality.

The council’s new 11 councillors were provisionally named this morning, with two councillors from the sacked class of 2009, Sam David and Margaret Giudice, being elected.

The majority of the new council are women, with the Grasslands ward all female: Victoria Borg, Duyen Anh Pham and Lucinda Bailey.

Former councillor Troy Atanasovski missed out on Grasslands, despite collecting the third highest number of first preference votes, 3094.

In the hotly-contested Harvester ward, John Hedditch, Kim Truong and David came out on top.

“I didn’t think I’d be this excited,” long-time Sunshine community advocate Hedditch told Star Weekly this afternoon.

“It’s a really diverse and multicultural council, lots of women, lots of different cultures and (political) independents.

“The council needs a fresh start, the work begins in earnest tomorrow.

“We need councillors who work for the people and the community, it’s not about shady back room deals with developers.”

Former mayor Giudice joins Georgina Papafotiou and Bruce Lancashire in the Taylors ward.

“This is sweet vindication,” she said.

“I’ve worked really hard to get back.”

Virginia Tachos and Daniel Allan will fill the Horseshoe Bend ward positions.

Victorian Electoral Commission spokesman Mike Lagastes said the VEC had not received any requests for a recount so far.

Election results will be made official tomorrow at the Brimbank Community and Civic Centre at 4pm.
