Sunshine filmmaker Michael Sandic’s new show to appear on Channel 31

He’s helped Sunshine find its style … and now a Brimbank filmmaker will try to fool audiences on community television’s Channel 31, starting tonight.

Two-time Sunshine Short Film Festival open category winner Michael Sandic (Man vs Sunshine, Sunny City) has just put the finishing touches on his latest production, a six-episode ‘mocumentary’ Best of Community TV (BCT), which parodies all that’s weird and wonderful about the grassroots channel.

“Community TV is really funny – you’ll switch on for a random moment, and you’ll see some of the oddest things,” he says.

“Each sketch [on my show] will last from between 30 to 60 seconds, and will jump back and forth, as if [you’re] channel surfing.

“Each of the different sketches will be a parody of a community TV show with a ridiculous premise. The intent is to catch channel surfers as they pass by the channel, and get them to question if these are genuine shows or parodies.

“At no time do we say it’s a comedy show though, it’s like a gag within a gag.”

Sandic, a freelance filmmaker who also helped shoot the popular You Tube parody of

Gangnam Style, Rising Sunshine Style, back in 2013, says BCT was more than a year in the making, with scenes shot at his Sunshine West home, RMIT University and a local gym, with help from about 15 actors and extras.

“[It took] too long,” he laughs. “I did all the filming, production and editing over a year. It’s essentially a feature film’s worth of work.”

Best of Community TV screens on Tuesdays at 7.30pm on Channel 31 until November 29.
