Sunshine bakery rewarded for pie innovation

A Sunshine bakery is not only smashing the competition – it is but fooling some of the best judges of a meat pie in the country.

Ka Pies on Hampshire Road won an award for being Australia’s Most Innovative Pie at the 27th Great Aussie Pie competition at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre last month after initially confusing judges with its popular chilli con carne vegan pie.

The judges mistakenly awarded it a silver medal in the red meat category.

Owner Adrian Apswoude said he wasn’t surprised by the result, as his chilli con carne creation resembled a meat pie in taste.

“I immediately contacted the competition spokesperson who suggested that it may have been an IT glitch,” he said.

“The next morning she contacted me to confirm that the judges were completely thrown and had no idea it was a vegan/vegetarian pie entry.

“Our pie was so unique in its flavour and design that the industry expert judges were certain they were tucking into a meat pie.

“The vegan chilli con carne pie has now been lovingly named chilli ‘non’ carne by its vegan fans.”

Ka Pies also won the award for Australia’s Best Pie at the Baking Association of Australia competition earlier this year with their controversial and vegan Thai vegetable curry creation.

It was the first non-meat pie to take out the prize.

The team took home three gold medals and six silver at the Great Aussie Pie competition, bringing the Ka Pies’ total to 27 medals in two years.

“We can boast that every pie in our range is an award-winning pie,” Mr Apswoude said.
