The revamped St Albans and Ginifer train stations are expected to be operating again by the start of November.
With two dangerous level crossings in St Albans – at Main and Furlong roads – to be removed six months earlier than first planned, a spokesman for Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said only landscaping, car parking and other “finishing work” would remain to be completed at the stations by next year.
The spokesman said the new St Albans and Ginifer stations are expected to be operating when the Sunbury line reopens on October 31. The line was shut down last Tuesday night for the start of a construction “blitz” which would result in both crossings being removed more than six months earlier than first promised.
About 700 construction staff began working around the clock to remove the crossings and rebuild the St Albans and Ginifer stations.
Buses last week began replacing trains between Sunshine and Sunbury on the Sunbury line and will continue to do so until October 30.
Furlong Road will be closed at the rail crossing from October 12 to 27, and Main Road will be closed at the railway line from November 4 to 28.
