WRFL: Albanvale coach keeps sights on next match

His players may be sitting pretty on top of the Western Region Football League ladder but Albanvale Football Club coach John Thrush isn’t buying the hype.

Despite the Cobras being the only division 3 team not to lose a match so far this season, Thrush sees plenty of room for improvement in coming weeks.

“We are playing OK,” the second year coach said.

“I still don’t think we have played our best footy yet but we are doing enough to get over the line at the moment.

“We have probably been lucky in a couple of games, which could have gone either way.

“There is a fair bit of room for improvement. It is still a work in progress,” Thrush said.

Albanvale has been a picture of consistency throughout the first third of the division 3 season, scoring more points than any other side on the attacking end and conceding 130 less than its nearest rival on the defensive end.

That has helped the Cobras secure wins over fellow finals’ contenders Parkside, Wyndham Suns and Braybrook.

This success consolidates last season’s form when Albanvale made the grand final before narrowly losing to Braybrook.

As far as getting a shot at redemption, Thrush is refusing to look too far down the road and is instead concentrating on his side’s match against Parkside this weekend.

“We just want to be in the top four at the moment and that is it,” he said.

“If we are going to make the four with four or five rounds to go and we can see where we stand; then we will take a look at it.

“We still haven’t played everyone yet. We need to worry about our next match.

“It is hard to look any further than that.”
