Race against time for Deer Park’s Brendan Fevola

Deer Park full forward Brendan Fevola faces a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s WRFL division one second semi final against Hoppers Crossing at Avalon Airport Oval.

Fevola has not played for the Lions since July 23, when he sustained a small fracture of his sternum when shepherding for a teammate in the victory over Altona at John McLeod Oval.

“He cleared a path for one of our players and got elbowed in the wrong spot,” Lions coach Marc Bullen told Star Weekly.

“The top of the sternum got a little fracture, so he’s had to down tools for four or five weeks.

“We’ll blow some cobwebs out of him this week and give him a good workout.

“Providing he’s fit and ready to go, Brendan will come into our side no question.”

Meanwhile, Kwame McHarg has been in scorching hot form for Deer Park with 42 goals in his past nine outings.

It is definitely a marked improvement from the two goals he kicked in his first six games of the year.

Bullen knows the team needs McHarg to be firing on all cylinders for the Lions to win a fourth successive flag and put his star player on notice after a slow start to the season.

“Kwame kicked five goals around the halfway mark of the year and I put that on the whiteboard and made a point of that and he’s kicked 40 since,” he said.

“He didn’t like me putting that on the whiteboard and since I’ve done that he’s gone berserk with goals.

“If Kwame plays well in this finals series and gets another medal, he’ll probably go down as the best ever WRFL player, let alone best Deer Park player.

“He’s got speed, he’s dynamic in the air and on the ground and can kick uncanny goals and has an engine that Ferrari would be proud of.”
