Caroline Springs woman’s survival instinct kicks in

With attacks on Victorian women seamingly always in the headlines, Suzan Izzet has taken her safety into her own hands.

The Caroline Springs resident recently joined the KAPAP Academy and is now a level one self-defence instructor.

KAPAP teaches a self-defence regime for men and women based on survival rather than choreographed moves.

“I’ve always been a confident person and I’ve never been afraid to defend myself but I’ve got so many friends who are not,” Ms Izzet said.

“I’m really passionate about teaching other people how to be confident in threatening situations.”

Ms Izzet is encouraging other women to stand up for themselves. She said her classes help women build confidence and equip them with defence tools that are not violent.

“The difference is we teach people how to disengage and get themselves out of a situation – sometimes even before it happens,” she said.

“Anyone can do it – it’s very simple and it’s not aggressive. We’re not there to fight and take on big men.”

Ms Izzet said the self-defence concept educates and empowers women by building up awareness and giving women strategies to avoid becoming a victim.

“I think it’s a necessity,” she said.

“Everyone at one point in their life needs to learn some self-defence.

“By educating more women and men, we can help save someone’s life … that’s our most important role.”

Ms Izzet is offering a free trial class at KAPAP Academy’s Spotswood headquarters on May 28 at 7pm.

The academy is at 2/50 Hudson Road.
