Calder United will be the team to beat when the women’s NPL finals kick off this weekend.
United finished the regular season three points clear on top of the ladder after a 2-2 draw with Southern United at Comets Stadium on Saturday.
A week earlier, United collected the premiers’ plate and said to the rest of the competition, catch us if you can.
“Being able to do that at home and in front of our own people was pretty special,” United coach Mark Torcaso said. “Having been presented with the plate at Keilor Park Reserve was fantastic.”
The hoopla surrounding the premiers’ plate has not distracted Calder from the big picture.
The finals are a whole new ball game, but United is best placed in the chase for the title.
“It was beneficial to finish on top,” Torcaso said. “It gives you the luxury of the double chance or the week off if you win your first final.
“You also get a home final, so we’re hoping we can get a few people out there and create a nice atmosphere for the club.”
