Books to give and take at Little Free Library

A charming weatherboard house at Sunshine appears to have two letterboxes, one of which is extraordinarily large.

But on closer inspection, the Benjamin Street property has just one letterbox and a bookcase that’s positioned within reach of passersby.

The books have been sheltered in a miniature house-like box that invites closer inspection.

Heidi Holley said her father-in-law built the streetside box as a gift for his wife last Christmas when her mother-in-law decided to join the Little Free Library community after spotting one in Yarraville.

“I thought it was a lovely idea to share the love of books and reading with the community,” she told Star Weekly.

The ‘give one, take one’ book exchange movement was started in the US seven years ago by Todd Bol as a tribute to his mother, who was a teacher and avid reader.

He built a model of a single-room classroom, put it on a post in his front yard and filled it with books.

Mr Bol then built several more and gave them away.

The movement quickly took off.

At the last count in January this year, there were 36,000 Little Free Libraries around the world.

Ms Holley said her children Augie, 7, and Elwyn, 4, love walking up to their grandmother’s house to borrow a new book.
