Education Department buildings may face savage cuts in the western suburbs. If funds were cut dramatically the Education Department would not be able to build “the kind of educational facilities which the people of this side of Melbourne deserve”, the District Inspector of Schools said at the opening of a new sports complex at Sunshine high school last Thursday.

A wave of serious crime in the Sunshine-Deer Park area in the past week has concerned senior police. Police have described the unprovoked attack of a 25-year-old Footscray woman in Sunshine last Thursday night as one of the “most vicious and cowardly” for several years.

The first inmates of the 125-bed Women’s Metropolitan Correctional Centre in Deer Park are expected to move in within a month. For security reasons, the state government is keeping the date secret but the initial intake will be from the cramped and outdated Fairlea Prison.

A newly formed mothers’ group has joined the Sunshine alliance of community groups advocating for a more ambitious redevelopment of the Sunshine Swim and Leisure Centre than the $9.5 million project just begun by Brimbank council. Last week the mothers stated in a manifesto that they were concerned about the lack of recreational facilities for young people in Sunshine and the western suburbs.
