Calls to commit to Calder Park Drive interchange mounting

Calls to prioritise the building of the Calder Park Drive interchange are mounting.

Northern Victoria state MP Wendy Lovell has requested Roads Minister Luke Donnellan to make upgrades to the Calder Highway a “priority project for Victoria”.

Ms Lovell wants him to commit the necessary funding to build the Calder Park Drive interchange.

In March, federal Labor MPs launched a petition calling on the Turnbull government to fund the project.

Last month, the Calder Highway Improvement Committee said the interchange at Calder Park Drive was its highest priority for improvements along the freeway due to increasing congestion in peak hours and a poor safety record.

VicRoads metro north-west regional director Vince Punaro said an overpass was dependent on federal funding.

“We do see that [overpass] as a priority,” he said.

Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Darren Chester told Star Weekly in March the federal government contributed money towards upgrades along the Calder Freeway, but the overpass was a matter for the state.

A spokeswoman for Roads Minister Luke Donnellan said the state government and VicRoads were considering a range of potential improvements for the Calder Freeway corridor, near Calder Park Drive, to boost safety and traffic flow.
