Art exhibitions inspired by Dreamtime tales and cultural workshops tailored for the next generation will provide the local flavour of NAIDOC Week over the next few days.
The special week, which celebrates the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, was due to start with the raising of flags by Uncle Gene Roberts at a ceremony in Sunshine on Tuesday morning.
Both Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander flags were to be hoisted, followed by a smoking ceremony and official welcome to country.
Art exhibition Marjorie’s Masterpieces, the work of Aunty Jean Mason, is running at the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre in Deer Park until July 9 as part of NAIDOC celebrations.
“My mother inspired my artwork, Dreamtime stories shared on our fishing journeys on how to live off the land, learning about the medicines, herbs and spices,” she said.
NAIDOC cultural workshops, including stories, dancing and face-painting, will be held at Deer Park and Sunshine libraries on Friday for children aged between five and 13.
