Chefs’ fiesta is all class

Charity was a main course for budding chefs at Copperfield College when they cooked up much more than a delicious feast for their peers.

The year 10 World of Food class manned the pots on Friday to host a cultural fiesta for the 600-student school and help raise money for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

While the total amount raised is yet to be confirmed, co-organiser Lucy Grande said they were hoping it would beat last year’s $2000.

“This event is on an even bigger scale than last year, and the kids absolutely loved it,” she said. “It’s about putting in their best effort and giving back to the wider community.”

The menu had Italian, Thai, Japanese and Indian influences, with lasagna, arancini, pasta and meatballs in abundance, joined by butter chicken, Thai green curry and sushi.

To sweeten the palate, there were tiramisu and yoyo biscuits. The fiesta also included musical and dance performances.

World of Food student Semina Subasic said she was proud to be part of the event.

“We’re using food and music as a way to promote and celebrate the fact we’re proud to be a multicultural school,” Semina said.

“Plus we’re really pleased to help fund cancer research and support cancer patients and their families.”
