Car thieves put on notice as Operation Reascending starts

Police in the north-west region will be out in force this weekend targeting theft of and from motor vehicles as part of Operation Reascending.

Acting Inspector Rodney Luke said theft offences relating to cars made up a significant workload of police.

“In an ideal world you’d be able to leave your car unlocked without any fear of having it broken into or stolen, but unfortunately that is not the world we live,” Acting Inspector Luke said.

“We’re doing our best to combat the issue, but there are a few things that members of the public can do to decrease the likelihood of falling victim to these crimes.”

According to the latest crime statistics, theft from motor vehicles jumped to 462 in Melton in the year to December.

Hume recorded 1064 thefts of motor vehicles – the highest in the region – followed by Darebin 951, Brimbank 930, Moreland 929 and Whittlesea 870.

Acting Inspector Luke urged drivers to lock their cars at all times and not leave valuables in plain sight.

“Park in well-lit areas when possible and if you see anyone acting suspiciously, call Crime Stoppers,” he said.

Operation Reascending is a regionwide operation and will run from Friday, June 12, to Sunday, June 14.
