Sydenham Park fall to fourth with draw

Sydenham Park and Preston Lions did each other no favours in their 1-1 draw in a Football Federation Victoria men’s state league1 game at Keilor Lodge Reserve on Saturday.

Sharing the points meant both teams slipped further behind ladder leader Altona Magic, which is six points clear of Preston and a whopping 10 in front of Sydenham, which fell to fourth.

The Magic is odds-on favourite for the title, and Cairnlea can vouch for that after being pummelled 6-1 at the weekend. Cairnlea’s day was a disaster, with goalkeeper Adam Hrehoresin injured after just 20 minutes.

North Sunshine continued its devastating form with a 4-1 thrashing of Diamond Valley United.

Keilor Park and Yarraville Glory played out a 1-1 draw, while Westgate beat Western Suburbs 3-2.

In the NPL, Melbourne Knights made it a delightful double over Port Melbourne Sharks at Knights Stadium on Sunday.

Four days after eclipsing the Sharks in the FFA Cup, the Knights repeated the dose with a 1-0 win in the league, courtesy of a rare Nick Glavan goal.

The Sharks finished the game with 10 men.

The victory moved the Knights to within four points of sixth spot.

Green Gully Cavaliers remain entrenched in the top six after their 1-1 draw with Heidelberg United at Olympic Village on Sunday night.

Liam Boland scored the second-half equaliser for the Cavs after Rodrigo Vargas’s own goal in the first half.
