In-form Falcons make it a perfect 10

City West Falcons extended their winning streak to 10 with a massive win over ACU Sovereigns in the Victorian Netball League.

After an even first quarter, the Falcons found their rhythm and took control, extending the led in every quarter to win 66-40.

Coach Marg Lind said that while she was relatively happy with her team’s performance, there were too many turnovers for her liking.

“It was quite a good win,” she said.

“Once we established ourselves after quarter-time we played well.

“We scored 16 goals in the first quarter which is still a good outcome, but they scored four goals from our turnovers.”

The Falcons made minor changes after quarter-time, but they worked perfectly. “We valued the ball better,” Lind said.

“We changed the structure around and the way we took the ball out of defence. We were going way too long. We used the short ball and got back to basics.”

The Falcons goalers made the most of their opportunities shooting at 90 per cent for the game.

Lind again mixed up the goaling combination, with Kath Knott, Julia Woolley and Jane Cook all getting court time.

Cook shot a game-high 32 goals.

“We put Kath at goal attack with Jane in the circle, which is a tall line-up,” Lind said.

“We’ve only run it a couple of times before. We need someone else who can play goal attack and it’s the first time it has worked well.

“We’ve been working with Kath on it and it means we can give Jules [Woolley] a rest.”

Lind said she thought at least six players would have got votes in the game.

The win sees the Falcons move to 10-1, a game clear on top of the ladder.

“I try not to think about [10 straight wins] as we’ve done that in the past,” Lind said.

“It doesn’t feel like we’ve won 10 in a row and it’s not something we’ll talk about.”

The Falcons under-19 and division 1 teams both have 9-2 records after they also recorded wins against the Sovereigns.

The division 1 team is second on the ladder only percentage off top spot, while the under-19s are third.

All three Falcons teams face Monash University Storm on Wednesday.
