Time for warm hearts

With long and dark winter months ahead, Brimbank residents are being asked to get behind efforts to help more than 100,000 homeless Australians feeling the cold.

Brimbank shopping centre has teamed up with the St Vincent De Paul Society’s winter appeal.

The centre’s retail marketing manager, Jenny Birt, said a vacant shop was being used as

a temporary donation drop-off point for blankets, jackets, coats, sleeping bags, scarves and beanies.

“We saw the opportunity to convert the hoarding [around the shop] into a donation drop-off point,” Ms Birt said.

The hoarding has slots into which donations can be left. The shop is opposite the Satchi Patisserie.

“We’re very community-focused,” Ms Birt said. “And we see this as an opportunity to support the community.” She said Vinnies not only helped the homeless but also many other people in need, and the centre was keen to extend its support to the non-profit organisation’s efforts among communities.

And Brimbank residents are already jumping on board with donations for the appeal.

“We’ve had some really positive responses,” Ms Birt said.

Shoppers can drop-off winter items, new or of good quality, from now until Friday, June 19.

Ms Birt also encouraged people to go online and make monetary donations to the winter appeal via the shopping centre website.
