It was a bleak old day for Sunshine Kangaroos in a 33-point loss to Altona in division 1 of the Western Region Football League on Saturday.
The Kangaroos managed only four goals from 17 scoring shots at Grant Reserve and conceded ground to a rival in the race for the finals.
Altona kicked five goals to nil in the second quarter to lead by 29 and the Roos were playing catch-up from then on.
Albion featured in the match of the day on Saturday but went down by two points in an edge-of-your-seat finish to Spotswood at McLean Reserve.
The Cats led at every change but the Woodsmen stormed to victory in the last quarter, 14.9 (93)-14.7 (91). Todd Finco kicked six for the Cats.
The Cats stay second-last on the ladder, a disappointing position for a team which can match it with the best on its day.
Deer Park had a comfortable 68-point win on the road at Wyndhamvale, with Jase Perkins kicking eight goals.
The second-placed Lions, premiers of the past three seasons, can eat into the two-game deficit behind ladder-leader Hoppers Crossing on Saturday.
The Lions host St Albans, while Hoppers has its first bye of the season.
In division 2, all eyes were on the top-of-the-table blockbuster between Caroline Springs and North Footscray at Town Centre Oval.
And just as in their first meeting this season, there was only single digits separating the two. This time North Footscray got revenge with a nine-point win to equal Caroline Springs’ win-loss record at 7-1.
