Art teacher Adrian Pentony described it as “a wall waiting to be tagged”.
The wall he was referring to is at the rear of Ambulance Victoria’s new base in Ballarat Road, Sunshine, which just happens to back on to Victoria University’s campus – the only TAFE campus in the state offering a signwriting course.
Mr Pentony said it hadn’t taken long before paramedics got talking with VU staff and Brimbank council to come up with a solution for the freshly minted wall.
His eight TAFE students were put to work reproducing a wall design as part of their signwriting apprenticeship studies.
The end product will form part of their assessment.
Mr Pentony was wary of comparing signwriting with graffiti or street art.
“We have to knock that [graffiti] side out of them [students] and turn them into professional tradies,” he said.
Mr Pentony described the wall project as a success.
“I think it’s been a good bridge between the ambos, council and the university,” he said.
Three students and a council artist completed work on the mural last week
