Overnewton Castle to host charity high tea

Overnewton Castle’s rich history and grandeur will provide the backdrop for one of almost 30 high teas being held across Victoria to raise money for a charity that aids women and children fleeing family violence.

Throughout May and June, McAuley Community Services for Women is calling on individuals, workplaces, schools and community groups to host high teas to help the organisation.

When Debbie Burtonclay, of Overnewton Castle Receptions, caught wind of McAuley’s high tea appeal, she immediately set aside May 28 to host an event at the Keilor castle.

“It warms my heart to have the chance to support an organisation that’s helping women and children,” she said.

McAuley chief executive Jocelyn Bignold said the charity hoped to raise about $60,000 in the next two months.

She said that last year the organisation supported about 1000 women and children by offering them safe havens and support.

“This year we can already see the number of women and children coming to us for support has increased, especially women who are pregnant,” she said.

The high tea at Overnewton Castle Receptions is on Saturday, May 28, from 1-3pm. Cost is $60 ($30 for children). For every ticket sold, $5 will be donated to McAuley’s women’s refuge. Bookings: 9331 6367
