Master’s apprentices show their art

An art exhibition in Deer Park showcases the work of the latest batch of students of prize-winning St Albans artist Paul Borg.

The Hunt Club Community Arts Centre show, One Year On, marks the first birthday of Borg’s The Studio Art School with works from his 18 students ranging from beginner level to the more adept.

Pieces include outdoor impressions of the Organ Pipes National Park.

“There are works that are skill-based so it’s working from still life to learn how to draw and paint,” the seven-time Doug Moran National Portrait Prize semi-finalist said.

“Some works are by experienced students who have been doing art for a while but need guidance in developing their own themes or interests. One is having a solo show soon.”

Borg said he has tried to build a relaxed, creative atmosphere at the school so artists can share and discuss their work freely. “I have many students who have been to higher education and learnt no real skills or guidance in drawing and painting, so they are coming to me for that,” he said.

“The idea of the school is that it will become an arts hub. Soon I will be having visiting speakers come in to give lectures to the students.”

The exhibition will run until June 4. For more information about The Studio Art School, go to www.thestudioartschool.net
