Musical gift for refugee children

An upcoming music recital will raise money to help teach Braybrook refugee children piano.

The Piano Project, which sponsors piano lessons for refugee children and new immigrants at the Western English Language School, will host its autumn recital on May 29.

The event, at the Meat Market in North Melbourne, will include a blend of musicians ranging from jazz through to classical, led by pianist and composer Gemma Turvey in collaboration with the New Palm Court Orchestra. The program will also feature Gianni Marinucci on flugelhorn.

Project founder Georgie Imberger says she hopes to fill every seat for the concert and raise about $4000 for the program.

“It’s all about these kids,” she says. “They get a chance to learn music and they love it.

“The inspiration for the recitals comes from a fabulous place in Berlin called Piano Salon Christophori, which I love.”

The man who runs the Piano Salon Christophori, Christoph Schreiber, spent his life restoring beautiful old pianos, according to Ms Imberger.

“A few years back, he started hosting recitals there,” she said.

“People come for free, have a glass of wine, donate some money for the musician and enjoyed top-shelf classical music.

“It is wonderful and very cool. We’re trying to create an atmosphere like that … we’re hoping that we might be able to bring some new ears to live classical music.

“We look forward to continuing to grow the program in the months and years ahead.”

Tickets cost $20 and all proceeds go to help fund the Piano Project. Book online at www.pianoproject.org.au
