Council proposes name for Brimbank civic centre

Sunshine’s new $52 million community and civic centre is likely to be called Brimbank House.

Residents have until June 2 to comment on the proposed name.

Council officers believe the title captures the “significance of the iconic civic and community asset” and reflects “the broad community services and facilities that will be available at the centre”.

“The name Brimbank House would highlight the purpose of the building for the community and the council,” a report stated.

“House is commonly used to refer to buildings that are owned by a government authority and where a deliberative body meets.

House is also used to denote a ‘building for any purpose’, which captures the diverse and inclusive use of the building by the community.

For the tenant partners occupying the centre, Brimbank House is a shorter name that allows for greater flexibility in the promotion of their services and branding.”

Administrator Jane Nathan said she hoped the entire community took ownership of the new centre.

“It will be a home, it will be a house,” she said. “We want to make sure all of Brimbank takes ownership of this building.

“It’s going to change the perception about the way people think about Brimbank.”

The name has received in-principle support from the Registrar of Geographic Names.
