St Albans train station will be rebuilt underground while two dangerous level crossings in the area will be removed by 2017.
The state government today announced Leighton Contractors, Aurecon and Hyder Consulting would design and construct the crossing removals at Main and Furlong roads with the rail line lowered under the road. Work would begin in coming months.

Former St Albans Trader Association vice president Asip Demiri, a long-time critic of the deadly crossings, said it was great result for the Brimbank community.
“It’s one of the happiest things in my life,” he said.
“It’s long, long overdue but that’s irrelevant now. We can put the horrible past behind us.”
The Age reported the compulsory acquisition of some businesses in St Albans are required and transport minister Jacinta Allan said these discussions were almost complete.
