Tight defence gets Thunder over the line

A second-half blitz helped Keilor secure its first win of the Big V basketball division 1 women’s season.

Saturday night’s match against Craigieburn was relatively even in the first half, with both sides struggling to make the most of shooting opportunities from the floor.

But after holding a four-point lead at half-time, Keilor took the ascendancy.

It started at the defensive end, with Craigieburn managing only nine points for the quarter and just four of 18 field goal attempts.

That allowed Keilor to increase its lead to nine going into the final term and from there the Thunder never relinquished the momentum.

A further 22 points provided Keilor with the 18-point win, 71-53.

For the second game in a row, Jessica Scannell led the way for the Thunder with a game-high 19 points to go with nine rebounds and four steals.

Megan Neill top-scored for the Eagles with13.

Keilor will now turn its attention to a huge double-header weekend, against Werribee on Saturday night and Geelong on Sunday.

Meanwhile, in men’s Big V, the Thunder continued its hot start to the season under first-year coach Pete Godfrey and improved to 2-0 with a 14-point win against Warrandyte.

The Thunder didn’t have things all its own way though, and was forced to fight during a tough first half.

But the longer the match went, the better the home side looked.

Led by 21 points from Andrew Kaban, Keilor controlled the second half, reeling in a six-point half-time deficit and running away with the win.

Also impressive for the Thunder were Harrison Salm and Brandon Day, who both scored in double figures for the winners.

Keilor men’s team will take on Sunbury this week.
