Brimbank council will consider building a new car park “structure” in the heart of Sunshine to make up for 90 spaces expected to be lost through a new VicRoads regional office.
The council will either sell or lease land at the southern end of the Clark and Withers streets carpark for the new 2000sq/m building, expected to open in late 2017.
It is looking at options to make up for the car parking shortfall.
“Options … may include a structure on part of the northern part of Clarke/Withers streets car park, or somewhere nearby,” a council report found.
The regional office building is expected to be at least six storeys high however the project developer is keen for a seven-storey development if the land is purchased outright.
The current VicRoads regional office in Ballarat Road employs 150 staff.
VicRoads acting regional director metro north west Bryan Sherritt said staff will move to the new office late in 2017.
“Relocating the office from its current location on Ballarat Road into the heart of Sunshine will allow staff to be more engaged with the community,” he said.
He said proximity to Sunshine train station would be another bonus for staff.
Construction is due to begin later this year.
A hearing of submissions about the council’s decision to lease or sell is due May 16, with a submission deadline of May 4.
